We are really excited about the third webinar in our Family Leadership Series which takes place on Friday 29th January from 11:00am – 12:00pm. The topic of this webinar is: An introduction to supported decision making for children and young people with disabilities with Clíona de Bhailís.In this webinar participants will learn about supported decision making and how this relates to decision making for children and young people with disabilities. Making decisions, having a say on the issues which affect you and having your decision/opinion respected are concepts central to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Supported Decision making can include relationships, practices or other measures which help someone to make a decision, communicate their decision/opinion and understand or weigh up the different options available to them. It can be applied to a wide range of situations or decisions from healthcare to finances or accessing services and can be used by those with complex support needs. Clíona believes that developing decision making skills, using supports and the right to have your say does not start at 18. Clíona will share insights from her research on decision making and supports including how these concepts apply to children and young people with disabilities. She will also share practical examples of supported decision making and how families can support their son or daughter, brother or sister to ensure their voice is heard throughout their life including when transitioning to adulthood. Participants will have opportunities to ask questions and a list of resources to support decision making will be available afterwards to all participants. This webinar is for families with children/young people with an intellectual disability and/or autism who are pursuing an inclusive life for their child.
